Azat Miftakhov, a PhD student of a department of Mathematics and Mechanics of Moscow State University, was detained February 1, 2019 on dubious charges. The federal media presented to the public some misleading proofs that were allegedly found during the search. The only witness, Daniil Galkin, has already publicly denounced his testimony claiming that it was given under tortures. Such actions raise doubts about the credibility of the investigation.

It is not the detention a MSU PhD student per se, but the fact that he was tortured and threatened that is the most outrageous. Azat, was hit in the face and heavily beaten, he has a mark left by an electric screwdriver on his chest. Regardless of the fault of the student (if there is any) such actions are inadmissible.

Assault and battery, intimidation, torture and even political assassinations are becoming usual to the Russian landscape. The society that doesn’t resist and react bears a part of responsibility for these horrible practices. . If yesterday tortures by the law enforcement officers could easily happen in prisons, today they can anybody can be tortured. We can only stop the lawlessness together!

Just like in the case of Dmitry Bogatov, we as university professors consider it our duty to support the young colleague and a mathematician. We demand the strict law compliance in this case, we strongly emphasize that medieval methods of getting the confession and testimony are unacceptable.
